The Raising of Lazarus

John 11:1-45

The painting, “The Raising of Lazarus,” by Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet is a masterpiece of seventeenth century French Baroque art. Measuring an impressive 13 feet by 22 feet, this work is one of the largest pieces the artist ever created. Its composition is equally impressive. Jouvenet uses the chiaroscuro technique to create a dramatic effect on the scene. Chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, bold contrasts which affect the whole composition. The characters are arranged in different planes, creating a sense of depth and movement. The body of Lazarus, which is being lifted up by Jesus, is the focal point of the composition, despite its placement far left.

Color is another interesting aspect of the work. The artist uses a warm, earthy color palette to create an atmosphere of serenity and solemnity. The gold of the robes of the characters and the light emanating from the figure of Jesus create an effect of divinity and holiness.

The story behind this painting is equally fascinating. The Raising of Lazarus is one of the most moving stories in the New Testament, always proclaimed on the Fifth Sunday of Lent in Cycle A years (and at celebrations of the Scrutinies). It is the last of the three great catechetical gospel stories taught to the catechumens of the early Church as they prepared to receive Baptism at the Easter Vigil.

Jouvenet was hired to create this work by King Louis XIV of France. However, the artist was not happy with the location the king had chosen for the painting. Jouvenet believed that the work was too large for the space, and would not be properly appreciated. After discussion with the king, Jouvenet managed to have the painting placed in a more suitable location, where it could be viewed and admired in its entirety. Today, it is on display in the Louvre in Paris. Jouvenet died on 5 April 1717, having been forced by paralysis during the last four years of his life to work with his left hand.

In short, “The Raising of Lazarus” by Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet is a masterpiece of French Baroque art. Its composition, color, and the story behind the work make it a fascinating and impressive piece to feature on the cusp of Holy Week.

Blessings in the week ahead,

Fr. Terry
