Dear Partners in Ministry,
What a slate we have ahead of us! From the Saint Augustine Dinner tomorrow night to our Parish Feast Day celebrations this weekend, there's a lot of good busy-ness for us to attend to. Important information about these celebrations—and what waits for us in the next few months— is below.
Music Ministry: a reminder that the 9 am Mass this Sunday is an "all-choir Mass," meaning that any of you who can join us are strongly encouraged to do so. We'll still need ministers for the other two Masses, of course, so if you're up to "play two," I'll be happy to let you. We'll welcome the Bellflower String Quartet and trumpet to all three Masses, and the Bell Choir to both celebrations on Sunday. Many thanks to the Saint Noel Endowment Fund for making it possible to enjoy these additions to our liturgies!
Peace be with you,
Tony
NEWS
Our Lit_rgies Are Missing Something... U
We have three important liturgical celebrations in the near future— two Masses for All Saints' Day, and the annual All Souls' Memorial Mass— and, unfortunately, we're still missing quite a few ministers for these celebrations, especially ushers and coordinators! If you are able to volunteer for these roles, please visit MSP as soon as possible to add your name.
As of this writing, we're in need of the following:
- All Saints (Nov 1), 8:30 a: Server, 4 EMHCs, 3 Ushers, Sacristan, Coordinator, Livestream
- All Saints (Nov 1), 7:00 p: Server, Lector, 4 EMHCs, 3 Ushers, Coordinator
- All Souls (Nov 2), 11:00 a: Server, 2 EMHCs, 3 Ushers, Coordinator
Thanks to everyone who helps make these Holy Days a little less "Holey."
An Advent Preview
We are 46 fast-flying days away from the First Sunday of Advent, and the beginning of the 2025 liturgical year. I'm pleased to share a brief sneak peek at the Advent Season, including music selections (link at the end of this post).
- Each week, we'll begin our Masses by singing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (two verses each week, based on readings)
- We do not sing the Glory to God in Advent, so we'll sing a Kyrie based on "Comfort, Comfort, O My People" at the Penitential Act.
- The Lectionary for Mass offers several options for the proclamation of the Responsorial Psalm, one of which is to employ a common refrain in a particular season. We're going to give this a go in Advent, singing the refrain, "Come, O Lord, and set us free!" and changing the verses to the proper psalm text for the weekend.
- The Preparation of Gifts will feature a familiar and/or traditional seasonal hymn each week. On December 22, we'll introduce "Unexpected and Mysterious" to the assembly, one week after singing it for the Gaudete! concert.
- We'll go forth to an uplifting, comforting song each week, including Steve Angrisano's "Emmanuel" and Dan Schutte's "Christ, Circle Round Us."
- Acclamations will once again include Barbara Bridge's "Christmas Season Gospel Acclamation," Bob Hurd's "O God, Hear Us," and Hurd and Ken Canedo's Mass of Glory.
Concert Series: Wit's Folly This Saturday
All are welcome to join us for Salon Español, a concert by local quintet Wit's Folly, this Saturday at 7:30 p. The Spanish academias— meetings of free-spirited, creative thinkers— produced some little-known but beautiful music for small ensembles, and laid the groundwork for several dances still popular today, including flamenco. Wit's Folly invites you to experience not only the sound of these academias but also the spirit! All Concert Series events are free and open to the public.
Reminder: Lectors Needed for Gaudete Concert
I would love to include three to five of you wonderful lectors in this year's Gaudete! concert on December 15. Ideally, these lectors would not be Music Ministry members (to spread the love around a bit, and to keep from overworking anyone). If you're available and interested, please let me know. Thanks!
