Dear Partners in Ministry,
Before I get to the Summer stuff, an invitation: You have two chances next week to enjoy the performance of our own organist, Steve Kuerbitz, as he presents pieces by Bach, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Jongen. Catch him Sunday, May 26 at 1 pm, Saint Paschal Baylon Parish (5384 Wilson Mills, Highland Heights) or Tuesday, May 28 at noon, Church of the Covenant (11205 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland).
A Summer Sneak Peek
While the solstice hasn't quite caught up to us yet, the liturgical year moves from the springtime of Easter to the resumption of Ordinary Time. This week, I thought I'd share a few highlights of our planning for the next few months:
- While Ordinary Time is upon us, we won't be breaking out the green on Sundays just yet. This stretch of Ordinary Time begins with a pair of Solemnities: The Most Holy Trinity on May 26, and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) on June 2. It'll be the following weekend, June 9, when we'll go green again and resume our numerical count of the weeks in the season.
- Speaking of Solemnities: we celebrate the Assumption of Mary (a Holy Day, FYI) on Tuesday, August 14 (Vigil Mass, 7 pm) and Wednesday, August 15 (Mass, 8:30 am).
- July 28 is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the start of a five-week focus on the "Bread of Life" readings from John 6. From the feeding of the multitudes to a moment of discernment for Jesus' disciples, our scriptures call us to a deep dive into God's providence, and a re-examination of our willingness to take our seat at the table. These weeks' psalms are a bit of a liturgical rarity, as we hear Psalm 78 for the only time in the 3-year cycle, and pray with Psalm 34 ("Taste and see the goodness of the Lord") for three consecutive Sundays (if you've been coming to GIFT this year and wondered why there are so many settings of this psalm to choose from, here's why!). Our three will be James Moore's classic "Taste and See," a new one of mine, and John Foley, SJ's beloved "The Cry of the Poor."
- We'll sing what I sometimes refer to in choir as the "Frankenmass:" a combination of the Glory to God and Eucharistic Prayer acclamations from Marty Haugen's Mass of Creation; the Celtic Alleluia; and Tom Kendzia's Lamb of God companion to his "Taste and See."
- Finally, I'm introducing one of my first published pieces this summer, "O Christ Our Life." The verses of this Communion processional were written from those John 6 readings, and are tied together with an easy, mantra-like refrain.
Peace be with you,
Tony
