THE WEDNESDAY REPORT: June 28, 2023

Dear Partners in Ministry,

It's the end of June, and time to rehearse together! It's also time to introduce you to the Mass setting we'll be adding to the repertoire this Fall, so... let's get to it.

Reminder: Choir Rehearsal Tomorrow Night!

We're gathering tomorrow night for the second of only three summertime rehearsals. If you can possibly be there, please do! See below for details.

The Great Music Round-Up: June 29–July 2

It's time to lighten those binders... we're going to turn in choral music next week at rehearsal and during the weekend. This is a great time to get rid of music you've been hanging on to from the past as well.

This is a very simple structure this time: turn in everything except the following pieces, which you'll need at least once this summer.

If it's not on this "keep list," don't keep it.

KEEP LIST:

  • 1.001 · Mass of Creation (Haugen)
  • 1.004 · Mass of Encounter (Ward) in whichever form you receive it tomorrow night...
  • 2.020 · Psalm 85: Lord, Let Us See Your Kindness (Ward)
  • 3.033 · Gift of Finest Wheat (Kreutz, arr. Keil)
  • 3.058 · O God, You Search Me (Farrell)
  • 3.061 · Take and Eat (Joncas)
  • 3.065 · Laudate Dominum (Taizé)
  • 3.071 · Sent Forth as Light (Ward)
  • The Word of God (Ward)
  • Vocal Warmup Sheets (A-B-C)

RESURRECTION CHOIR ONLY:

  • 1.101 · Song of Commendation (Keil)
  • 1.102 · Che gli angeli/The Heavenly Choirs (Ward)
  • 2.017 · Psalm 23: Complete Setting (Ward)
  • 3.060 · In Your Dwelling Place (Ward)

Reminder: Independence Day Mass

We will celebrate Mass with music on July 4 at 9:00 am; all are welcome to join me in Music Ministry. Selections can be found below.

Introducing (the rest of) Mass of Encounter

I'm so happy to share with you what I hope will be a positive contribution to our liturgical life: Mass of Encounter. You and all our parish family inspired this setting, which I composed over the late fall and winter. A group of you gave it a test run in February and had a ton of helpful feedback, which I incorporated into this latest and hopefully final version (that said, feedback is always welcome... maybe you can help me make it better!)

We've already sung a piece of it— we used the Prayer of the Faithful this Easter. We'll get to know the rest of this setting in Music Ministry over the summer and begin implementing it this September as follows:

SEP 3: Holy
SEP 10: Mystery of Faith: Save Us, Savior
SEP 17: Amen
SEP 24: Lamb of God
OCT 1/8: Glory to God
OCT 15: Gospel Acclamation

If all goes to plan, we'll be able to sing the entire setting by October 22, our parish feast day.

Tomorrow night, I will hand you either the complete choral/piano score (which I'm working feverishly to edit and finalize) or, if that doesn't work, a melody-only handout. Either way, I'll play through at least the Eucharistic Acclamations at rehearsal. I'm also working on demo recordings and hope to have at least the Holy ready by next week.

My hope, of course, is that our parish will pray well with this new setting for years to come. Whether or not that's the case, I'm genuinely grateful to everyone who's already reviewed it— and to all of you for giving it a shot.
