THE WEDNESDAY REPORT: February 19, 2025

Dear Partners in Ministry,

It was wonderful to be back with you in worship this weekend, especially for our catechumen Samantha's Rite of Introduction at the 9 am.... the sight of nearly the entire assembly gathered with her and her sponsor, welcoming her wholeheartedly into our family of faith, was deeply moving and joyful. If you were part of that assembly, thank you for answering the call to bring Christ to others.

Lots to discuss as we reach the 14-day mark to Ash Wednesday. Read on!

Peace be with you,

Tony

All Ministries: A Look at Lent 2025

Lent begins on March 5 with Ash Wednesday. We'll celebrate Masses with distribution of ashes at 8:30 a and 7:00 p; please take a look at MSP and see where you might be able to serve in your ministries. Our forty days lead us to Palm Sunday (April 13) and Holy Week, and ultimately to our celebrations of the Sacred Paschal Triduum (April 17–19) and Easter Sunday (April 20).

READINGS: Our Lenten scriptures for Year C call us to reflect on manifestion's of God's love, might, and mercy: we explore the temptation of Christ in the desert, Christ's transfiguration, Moses' encounter with God at Horeb, the parable of the Prodigal Son, and Christ rescuing the woman accused of adultery.

The 9:00 Masses, however, will encounter a different set of readings for the last three Sundays, as we celebrate the Scrutinies with Samantha. For these Masses, we will hear the readings of Year A: the Samaritan woman at the well, the healing of the man born blind, and the resurrection of Lazarus.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL: As we did last year, our petitions will take on a much more reflective character. A short intercession will be read, followed by a moment of silence for each of us to pray and reflect on it, and concluded with a simple chanted response.

MUSIC: Selections for the season are now available on Google Sheets; I'll have the first two sheets (March 5–16) printed for you by Thursday night.

  • You'll see a new section on your song sheets, beginning this Lent: a list of pieces you'll be able to turn in after your Mass each weekend. This should help all of us manage our binders more efficiently and will help our librarians keep things organized and moving along smoothly.
  • We'll begin our Lenten Masses with the meditative ostinatos of the Taizé community, a mix of the familiar ("Bless the Lord," "In the Lord I'll Be Ever Thankful," "With You, O Lord," and new additions to our repertoire ("In God Alone My Soul" and "Lord Jesus Christ.")
  • Our Penitential Act (Form B) culminates in Luke Rosen's haunting "Kyrie Litany."
  • With two sets of readings (see above) come two sets of Responsorial Psalms, both of which are provided for you on each Sunday's song sheet when applicable.
  • Our Lenten Gospel Acclamation and Eucharistic Acclamations come from Curtis Stephan's Mass of Renewal, and the Agnus Dei chant from the Roman Missal.
  • We'll introduce a new Lenten song this year, Ricky Manalo's "Beyond the Days." (JS 360)
