THE WEDNESDAY REPORT: April 24, 2024

Dear Partners in Ministry,

Those of you who were part of this year's fabulous Easter Vigil this year remember well the joy of celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation, but we were missing one of our catechumens that night. Dyllan (whose mother and little sister—the one whose feet floated out of the font— were fully initiated) was unable to join us. She is back with us now, though, and we want to celebrate her initiation with as much of that Vigil gusto as we can! This Sunday at 11 am, Dyllan will be baptized, confirmed, and will receive her First Communion. If any of you are able to join us for a second Mass this weekend, I'd love to add you to the 11 am crew.

Here's an overview of these rites when they take place outside of the Vigil:

  • After the homily, we will sing the extended version of the chanted Litany of the Saints as Dyllan and her family process to the font, led by the Paschal Candle. (Note that the Creed is not said.)
  • Fr. Terry will lead us in a prayer of thanksgiving over the waters of the font, which were blessed at the Vigil.
  • Dyllan will then make her Profession of Faith and Renunciation of Sin; she is then anointed with the Oil of Catechumens.
  • Then, like her buoyant sister before her, Dyllan will be baptized by immersion. As she emerges from the font a third time, we'll sing an Alleluia as a community.
  • Her explanatory rites (receiving the baptismal garment and candle) take place.
  • She will then move to the altar steps as we celebrate her Confirmation: Fr. Terry will invoke the Holy Spirit through the Laying On of Hands, then anoint Dyllan with Chrism.
  • Dyllan will be introduced to us as the newest member of our Church family, and we'll welcome her with joyous applause!
  • She will then join us for the first time in the Prayer of the Faithful.
  • The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows as normal; however, we'll sing the Taizé "Veni Sancte Spiritus" instead of "Love One Another" at the Preparation of Gifts.
  • Dyllan will be the first to receive Communion, after which you'll receive as normal.
