Dear Partners in Ministry,
Thank you so much to those of you who attended last night's GIFT session, those who stayed for the activity, and all of you for your patience with me in not writing to you yesterday.
Two things from last night I'd like to share with you all:
1. In putting this together, I decided to seek the wisdom of those whose amazing contributions to liturgical music have been such a big part of our story as worshipping people. So, I asked eight composers to share their thoughts on three questions related to beauty and the words we pray in song... and they responded brilliantly. I could only share a tiny sliver of their wisdom due to time, but I'll be posting their full comments on the GIFT webpage after editing them after (by end of the month at latest). Tune in later to hear some wonderful insight from Alan Hommerding, Rory Cooney, Christian Cosas, some guy named Kevin Keil, Roc O'Connor, Luke Rosen, Scott Soper, and Janèt Sullivan Whitaker.
2. After the presentation and a crash course on hymns and metered text, the group took on the challenge of crafting their own lyrics, based on Psalm 103. The plan is to gather and edit/adapt all these pieces into a collaborative hymn, sung to the tune NETTLETON ("Sing a New Church.") Then, we'll sing that hymn for Prep of Gifts on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. More to come....
