US Bishops and Gun Control

Since 1994, the United States Bishops have offered a consistent message on gun violence and gun control. Through their spokesperson, the Bishops offered the following statement after the murders at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX:
“There have been too many school shootings, too much killing of the innocent. Our Catholic faith calls us to pray for those who have died and to bind the wounds of others, and we join our prayers along with the community in Uvalde and Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller. As we do so, each of us also needs to search our souls for ways that we can do more to understand this epidemic of evil and violence and implore our elected officials to help us take action.”

The humanitarian crises is worsening daily in Ukraine, as Russia intensifies its invasion of the country and bombardment of civilian areas and buildings. The conflict has already forced over 3 million people to flee their homes, villages, and cities. The daily increase of these numbers, and their needs, are significant.

(CRS) is on the ground in Ukraine and the surrounding countries with Caritas Ukraine, Caritas Poland, Caritas Romania, and Caritas Moldova to respond to those needs. Here's how you can help:

Financial giving is proving the most helpful at this time. Supplies are increasingly difficult to access inside Ukraine, due to the violence and blockades. CRS is working with local partners to provide assistance in a cross-border manner. Since many supplies are accessible in Europe, the local Caritas teams are requesting that asking for cash resources allows agility in purchasing local items. This will reduce the cost of shipments and time it takes to get supplies delivered, as well as support the local businesses that are assisting with relief efforts.

Welcome Tony Ward

  Please welcome, Mr. Tony Ward

  Director of Music

After a second interview and having been invited to co-direct our choir last week, on behalf of our staff, I am very pleased to welcome and introduce to you our new Director of Music at Saint Noel Parish, Mr. Tony Ward!

He and his wife, Jenny, and their four children, are native to Omaha, Nebraska, but have lived on the East side of Cleveland for the past four years. His background includes nearly 30 years as a liturgical musician, director, and published composer, as well as having experience in graphic design, music education, and radio. He earned his Master's Degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory and has served church communities in four states. After the pandemic had forced permanent layoffs at a previous parish, he worked as a self- employed graphic designer for Catholic publishers and social media content providers. However, his heart has always been in liturgical music. He has shared that it is doubly joyful to do what he loves most again, “and for such a wonderful community of faith,” he writes.

Among staff members, Mr. Richard Gullion (who served as Director of Music in 2009) and our beloved Agnieszka (who most recently served from 2009-2021), both of whom shared that they “will the good of the parish,” graciously gave of their time to serve on the panel of second interviews. In collaboration with one another, after some time in prayer, and with every confidence, we feel God has placed within our midst, not only the right person whose gifts and talents will be appreciated, but the right fit within our parish family. Already, since Monday, we have all enjoyed light-hearted laughter and faith-sharing in the office.

This Wednesday, as a part of leading prayer at GIFT, Tony will include a piece of original music he composed, that we were already prepared to feature, before we even met him! (Michele, who realized and discovered this, is still trying to process this incredible connection.) So, sign up and RSVP if you haven’t already: https://stnoel.breezechms.com/form/29f77e

It goes without saying, but our entire parish community owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Anthony Camino, our pastoral associate, who has worn more hats in recent months than Queen Elizabeth II ever could. Since before Advent, throughout this period of transition, and without hesitation, he stepped forward, leading us marvelously well in song. His knowledge and respect for the Mass and liturgical music, solid understanding of the repertoire enjoyed at Saint Noel, respect for our choir and instrumentalists (which he knows have been well-formed), all while fostering our full, active, and conscious participation, has been the very gift needed to carry us before welcoming Tony to our parish family. A word of thanks, too, to Anthony’s wife, Laura. Undoubtedly, his additional commitment demanded sacrifice and time away from each other each week.

The celebration of the Eucharist is the most important thing we do as Catholic Christians. Every Church document stresses just how integral music is to the Mass. Liturgy done well forms us better than anything else; if done poorly, it is to our detriment. I hope you might understand and appreciate just how serious our collective efforts and energy were spent in searching for the right individual who will help ensure this remains our experience of worship at Saint Noel. In our 42-year history, we have been gifted with some of the best. After a nationwide search I am, again, only too pleased to welcome Mr. Tony Ward, and his family, to ours.

Immaculate Conception

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception maintains that the Virgin Mary, from the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege from Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.” This concept enjoyed intense devotion in Spain during the 1600s. First debated by medieval theologians, Pope Pius IX gave it the status of dogma in 1854. The abstract subject required artists to develop appropriate imagery. The crescent moon, for example, comes from the New Testament vision of Saint John the Evangelist (Revelation 12:1) of a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet.” For centuries, Mary was illustrated wearing red, wrapped in blue. Here, white is used to symbolize her purity. Blue pigments were originally made from costly minerals such as lapis lazuli, cobalt, and azurite. Therefore, the most expensive color was only used for the most worthy of subjects.

Our Patronal Feast

    Fr. G. David Bline

, a spiritual director for the seminary community, who from time to time within the past year has assisted with Masses, shared that he was given relics of several of the North American Martyrs, including Saint Noel. In honor of our parish's celebration, he has loaned them to us for public veneration throughout this weekend, as well as on our actual feast day, October 19.

Why do we bother with the veneration of relics? To begin: to venerate is to regard with reverential respect or with admiring deference; to honor (as an icon or a relic) with a ritual act of devotion. Veneration is not worship. Nor do we believe that relics contain magical powers. We do, however, believe that God's holy work is accomplished through good and holy people, like our great saints. We believe that even death, as Jesus proved on the Cross, cannot thwart his plans and that Our Lord's work continues through the saints even after their death.

Apart from countless miracles that have come to pass in association with these holy reminders over the centuries, relics also serve as our connection to our past. They are reminders that our saints are not simply names in a book or "make-believe" people. They were real, living, and breathing people just like us, who struggled with many of the same difficulties and doubts that we live with every day.

Saint Noel himself, captivated by the dream of becoming a missionary in a new France (Canada) wanted to work among the native people. He struggled to bring the Huron Indians to Christ, and had great difficulty in learning the native language, as well as a personal aversion to the primitive and base lifestyle of the native peoples. He discovered quickly how difficult it was for him to be the missionary he wanted to be. Tempted to return to France, in 1647, he vowed to remain with the native peoples until his death. Only two years later, he was murdered by an apostate Huron Indian on 9 December 1649. Through it all, he and countless others, have remained true to God's grace, God's love, and God's work in their lives. Relics, if anything, remind us of the reality of the Communion of Saints.

They remind us, too, that one day our bodies, just like Christ's, will be resurrected. This should lead us to remember to revere the beauty and complexity of God's greatest gift of the human body, and lead us to respect our bodies and the remains of the deceased.

Saint Noel is the "silent hero of the hard trail, a patron of the lonely and disappointed, a man of great courage and faith in the face of tremendous hardship," as described in our parish photo directory. If you find yourself relating to the movements within his life, take a moment this weekend and pray with him, together with the remains of his companions.

Message from Bishop Malesic on Respect Life Month

All human life is precious, fragile and given directly to us as a gift by God. As such, we are brothers and sisters in our human family, made in the image and likeness of God. We are all called to live out our responsibility to care for, protect and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters.

All human life is precious, fragile and given directly to us as a gift by God. As such, we are brothers and sisters in our human family, made in the image and likeness of God. We are all called to live out our responsibility to care for, protect and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters.

Parishioner Fulfills Unique Request

On August 13, 2021, Mary, a nurse at Hospice of the Western Reserve, called St. Noel Parish. After our initial greeting, Mary asked me to consider a unique request; could someone in the prayer shawl ministry duplicate a large afghan belonging to one of the hospice patients. “You see,” Mary said, “the woman has two granddaughters and wants to give them each an afghan before she dies.”
I contacted Joanne Tadych, the head of our Prayer Shawl Ministry, hoping that she or someone in the group might take on this task. Not surprisingly, Joanne stepped forward herself feeling “called to take on the project because of such an immediate need.” She certainly had the resume for the job having been involved in needlework ministries for the last 20 years at both St. Bede and St. Noel parish. Equally important, Joanne knew she could get it done and committed to get started right away.
After an initial meeting with the patient (Joanne did not even know her name at this point) to view the afghan and a trip to the yarn store with her husband, Russell, Joanne put her talents to work. Within three weeks, Joanne completed a beautiful, duplicate afghan! On Tuesday, September 7, 2021, accompanied by Russell, Joanne delivered the afghan to Hospice and was able to spend some time with her new friend, Betty.
Later, Joanne reflected that, even though she did not know Betty’s name until she & Russell delivered the afghan, “all along as I crocheted, I prayed for her and felt blessed that I could fulfill her wish. In all the items I make for these ministries, I never knew who they went to, until this afghan gift. Her joy was a gift to me.”

Back in Our Church

I am very pleased to re-state: beginning with the 5 PM Saturday Vigil on September 4, we’ll be back in our church! I will begin hearing confessions again on a regular basis starting next Saturday from 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

What I am about to share, I hope is received well and with a sense of joy:

Part of our re-opening is now going to include the installation of a new Crucifix.

Allow me to share how this initially came about:

When Bishop Perez was still with us, on both occasions he visited our parish, he asked that I acquire a crucifix, relative to the size of the stone wall of our sanctuary. Both times my response was simply, “Yes, Bishop.” He gave no instruction other than, “Implement it at time when it makes sense, or feels appropriate to do so with your community.”

Shortly after his second ask, a parishioner approached me (without knowing the Bishop’s request) and simply shared, that if I ever felt our parish would acquire one, this individual would donate the cost in full. I shared my appreciation for this most generous offer and only said that we would remain in touch when I felt it appropriate to move forward.

My friends, brothers and sisters, in light of our renovation and plans to re-open the church, I feel the time is now appropriate. The attached images show a detail of the Corpus (Body) and a rendering of what it will look like installed. This acquisition began under the leadership of Bishop Perez, whom we could never have imagined would be newly-installed elsewhere so quickly. The Bishop’s Office has agreed with the previous ask and supports its installation, which we will bless in the context of Evening Prayer this coming Wednesday.

From a studio in Italy, known for their quality craftmanship, I chose the six-foot figure in white, which I believe complements our contemporary setting while still remaining classic in form. The light which pours in from our windows will illuminate the figure of Christ differently all throughout the day. Against the natural beauty of the stone, the Body of Christ will both stand out, and yet blend, given our large white walls on either side. The Cross itself was made by

It is my intention to repurpose our processional cross (which has served as our crucifix) to be the crucifix in the chapel where Daily Mass is celebrated. Had we actually planned for an interior renovation or were we to build a church today, updated documents call for the crucifix to be clearly visible to the assembled congregation: “…to visually dominate the sanctuary while still being in harmony with the other architectural elements of the church.” And while it is true that a processional cross may serve the purpose of a crucifix, it is truly meant for a considerably smaller space, such as a chapel or oratory.

Many of you have approached me at different times with this very request, so I believe this will largely be received with the joy in which it intends. Others, I am aware, appreciate very much the noble simplicity of our sacred space and may feel its need less. I can only say, it was asked of us by the Bishop, who remains the chief liturgist of the Diocese, and hope you feel I drew well on my background in art and art history to fulfill his ask for the good of our worshipping community.

Sacred Heart Chapel

As was shared this past weekend, beginning with the 5 PM Vigil Mass this Saturday, May 1, all Masses will be celebrated on the grounds of the Center for Pastoral Leadership (CPL) where both Borromeo and Saint Mary Seminaries are located. We will gather in Sacred Heart Chapel. The video below shows you where you need to go, whether you enter the grounds from Bishop Road or Euclid Avenue.

The staff and I gathered there this week to scope things out and began to familiarize ourselves with the space. With social distancing still in place, it looks like we can accommodate about 100 persons per Mass (give or take, with members of the same household able to seat themselves closer to one another in the same pew).
Members of the staff and I will be on the lookout to greet you and help direct you to the entrance of the chapel. Thank you again for accommodating us once again, as our parish family begins another chapter of this adventure. Hopefully, within 10-12 weeks, we’ll be celebrating in church once again!
The address to the CPL is:28700 Euclid AvenueWickliffe, OH 44092
See you there!

Message from Bishop Malesic on the Season of Lent

A beautiful characteristic of our Church is its seasons. They are like the movements of a great symphony, gracefully flowing from one to the other, bringing the emotion and meaning of the music to the listener. For the Church, the flow of its seasons is similar. From the joy of the Lord’s Nativity at the Christmas season to the hope of eternal life at Easter time, the Church’s seasons help bring the presence of the Holy Trinity to life in ways that keep the flame of faith burning within our hearts.
