Dear
Parishioner,
Each
year as the holidays approach, we at St. Noel
engage
in a large Christmas project of providing food and gifts for those
who are in financial need. Last year,
we
were able to assist over 100 families in Lake and Cuyahoga Counties.
This year all families were referred to the program through various
social service agencies in both Lake and Cuyahoga County. Referring
agencies include: Lake County Head Start, Lake Metropolitan Housing
Authority (LMHA), The North Coast Center, Ohio Department of Jobs
& Family Services, and the welfare departments of both counties.
Our
Youth Ministry coordinates this Christmas project. Members of our
youth group will be collecting money for this project after Masses
the weekends of December
1
st & 2 nd and December 8 th & 9 th . But there is a way
that you and your family can become personally involved. I am inviting
you to sponsor a family. This allows you to shop, wrap and, if you
would like, deliver Christmas gifts to a specific family who has
asked for assistance. Such an effort allows for personal contact
between people. It could be an excellent way for parents and children
to serve together as part of the preparation for Confirmation and
First Communion.
I
am also asking you to consider donating a turkey. Many stores provide
certificates for turkeys during the holiday season. If you receive
extra ones, it would be a real help to us if you could redeem the
certificate and bring the turkey to us. We have made room in our
Banquet Center to store the turkeys until Christmas. We need boxes
to wrap clothing items, tissue paper, wrapping paper, tape and gift
bags. (We do not need bows.)
Are
you coming to GIFT this month? You can help by bringing non-perishable
food items and paper products to GIFT in November. Boxes will be
available in the banquet center. You can also bring items to the
church anytime.
There
are many families struggling financially during this holiday season.
Your willingness to provide food and gifts to them is one excellent
way to make the good news of God's love more obvious in our world.
If
you would like to sponsor a family or if you have any questions
regarding the Christmas project or would like to help, please call
Anthony at 440-946-1128, ext. 20 or you can e-mail him at acamino@stnoel.org
.

CARING
FOR GOD'S CREATION -
Conserving
Energy
The
fact of global warming has finally reached the consciousness of
American consumers. The term "downshifting" is often used
to describe the act of moving from a lifestyle of greater consumption
towards a lifestyle based on voluntary simplicity
. Implied in this positive trend are the limits we can voluntarily
place upon our energy consumption. Some Advent transitions could
include a conscious effort to reduce energy use as we prepare for
Christmas and all its festivities.
Save electricity by fostering
a new habit; when someone leaves a room—or a hallway—the lights
go off. Try to celebrate the light of Christ by dedicating one evening
each week to lighting your home with candles—no electric lights.
Be aware of the food miles
traveled between the farm and the table to bring certain exotic
fruits and vegetables to your table. Rely more upon locally grown
food to create holiday feasts this year.
Conserve energy by disconnecting
appliances that are not in use, such as microwaves, coffeemakers,
televisions, etc. Turn off your computer at the end of your work
day. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents.
Add or subtract clothing rather than adjusting the thermostat.
In cooking for the holiday
parties and meals, cook in bulk. When you purchase in bulk you can
save money and travel time to and from the store. By cooking large
amounts of food that you can freeze for later meals, you save time
and energy.
