Dear Parishioner,
Yes
it is an election year. One of our greatest freedoms is to elect
those who govern us. One of our greatest challenges is to decide
who to elect. As Christians our faith should inform our choices.
As
the United States Bishops have recently written concerning the upcoming
election: “Our nation has been wounded; September 11 th and what
followed have taught us that no amount of military strength, economic
power or technological advances can truly guarantee security, prosperity
or progress. The most important challenges we face are not simply
political, economic or technological, but also ethical, moral and
spiritual. We face fundamental questions of life and death, war
and peace, who moves ahead and who is left behind.”
“Politics
in this election year and beyond should be about an old idea with
new power—the common good. The central question should not be, “Are
you better off than you were four years ago?” It should be, “How
can ‘we'—all of us, especially the weak and vulnerable—be better
off in the years ahead?”
To
assist us in our decision making process, we have invited Tom Allio,
the director of our diocese's Social Action Office to address us
on “Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Voter's Call to Political Responsibility.”
Mr. Allio is very familiar with the moral principles which should
influence a Catholic voter's decision and is eloquent in expressing
them. I ask you to join us this Tuesday, October 19 th at 7:00 p.m.
in our small hall.
I
believe that the insights and discussion which will occur will assist
all of us in making important choices this November.
Fr.
George Smiga
BUILDING
FUND MEMORIALS – Most
parishioners, who pledged to our building project chose to honor
those pledges over a period of three years. That period draws to
a close at the end of 2004. Therefore, we are beginning to assemble
into final form the pledge information that will remain as part
of the history of our parish. As announced during the pledge drive,
every parishioner who made and honored a pledge to the “Foundation
for the Future” Campaign will be recorded in a permanent memorial
book to be kept in the parish archives. Those who pledged $5,000
or more will have their names inscribed on a plaque which will hang
in the new hallway between the narthex and the parish offices. All
parishioners who will appear on the plaque should have received
a letter in the last weeks asking for the particular way they wish
their names to be written. If you have pledged $5,000 or more and
have not received such a letter, please call the parish office (440-946-0887)
so that we can update our files. We do not wish to leave anyone
out.
INACTIVE
CATHOLICS & REASONS WHY #4 – A significant number of
people have simply stopped going to church. In a survey (2000) published
in America Magazine, they just got too busy and didn't
find the time. Our culture tells us that we must work harder and
play harder, but nowhere does it acknowledge that, for the sake
of our human development, we must rest better and pray better. The
reasoning continues to where church attendance is no longer an issue.
What we can do! Through friendship and
casual conversation we can help our friends and family members to
begin the faith again. Never stop looking for creative, ingenious
ways to invite! “WELCOME WEEKEND” is
coming!
“WELCOME”
WISDOM & GOSPEL RESPONSE
This
week's Gospel story
of the Judge and the persistent woman reminds
us that we too must be persistent in calling people back to the
faith. Respond to the Gospel challenge! Never
cease letting our inactive friends, co-workers, neighbors, family
(inactive for any reason) know
that we miss them, we care about them, and we invite them to take
another look. We have found a spiritual home and want to share it
with them. Invite and accompany them to:

we review the political landscape, the most important challenges
we face are not simply political, economic or technological, but
