Dear
Parishioner,
Next
weekend we will hold our annual missionary appeal. Sr. Rosemary
Nyirumbe, a Sister of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart, will
speak after communion concerning the mission of St. Monica's Girl
Orphanage & Tailoring School which she directs in Uganda, Africa.
The purpose of the school is to rescue girls who had been captured
by rebels and forced to engage in guerilla warfare. At present 250
young women and girls attend the school where they are provided
with shelter, food, medicine, schooling and love. Sr. Rosemary will
be asking for our prayers and financial assistance to build a new
home where girls who were forcibly impregnated by the soldiers might
care for their children.
You
may donate to this missionary appeal three ways: (1) any loose cash
in next week's collection (2) ushers will be in the narthex after
the liturgies next weekend to accept any offering, or (3) place
a donation in next week's collection marked “missionary” (all checks
should be made out to St. Noel). Charity does not end at home. The
missionary appeal reminds us of our worldwide responsibility. Please
be generous next weekend.
I
would also like to announce that this Wednesday, October 3 rd our
6:45 p.m. mass will be celebrated to mark the closing of the 40
day fast which many in our parish have been observing for the cause
of world peace. If you have been observing the 40 day effort please
join us to ask again for God's mercy. This Thursday, October 4 th
, Bishop Lennon will celebrate a noon Mass at the Cathedral to mark
the closing of the fast on a diocesan level. You are all invited
to attend that liturgy as well.
I
hope we have all been moved by the example of Catholics throughout
our diocese who have been fasting and praying for peace for 40 days.
Even though this holy period is drawing to an end, the efforts by
all followers of Christ to build a peaceful world should continue.
Fr.
George Smiga
