Quick View of Meetings for the Week

Dear Parishioner,

This fall our Social Concerns Commission will be offering a unique educational and formational opportunity for those interested, willing and able to make a significant commitment to learning about Catholic Social Teaching, often called the Church's best kept secret. This process entitled, JustFaith, sponsored by Catholic Charities USA, utilizes books, videos, guest speakers, prayer and dialogue as the primary teaching tools. It is a conversion-based process that seeks to integrate personal spirituality and social ministry. The aim of JustFaith is to empower participants to develop a passion and hunger for justice and ultimately to express this passion in concrete actions.

JustFaith involves a substantial commitment. Participants will involve themselves in a process that includes 30 weekly sessions, two retreats, and four field experiences. In addition, participants are expected to do 2-4 hours of reading each week. The program asks a lot, but it also offers much, just like the Gospel! In addition, participants have the privilege of developing community as they journey through this program.

We will gather on Sunday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. beginning on 9/26/04 and conclude on 5/15/05. We will be reading 12-13 books and participants will be asked to contribute to the cost of the materials. Partial funding of this expense is being provided by our parish Endowment Fund. The individual cost will not exceed $100.00. Information and registration gatherings will be held on Saturday, August 28 th at 6:15 p.m., Sunday, August 29 th at 12:15 p.m. and Thursday, September 2 nd at 7:00 p.m. You many also call Alice at 440-946-0887.

On Sunday afternoon, September 12 th I will be offering some reflections on the Scriptural Themes of Justice as a means of launching our JustFaith effort. This afternoon will be open to all parishioners regardless of whether or not you sign up for JustFaith. More details in the bulletin item that follows. Please prayerfully consider attending on September 12 th and also one of the information gatherings on JustFaith. Perhaps now is the time when God is inviting you to deepen your understanding of the Gospel and its call to serve the causes of justice and peace.

Fr. George Smiga

“JUST WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE?”

On Sunday, September 12, 2004 Fr. George will be offering an afternoon of reflection on the Scriptural call to justice.  We will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a light lunch and conclude by 4 p.m. In addition to Fr. George's presentation there will be time for quiet reflection, group discussion and of course prayer.  A free will offering will be taken up to defray the cost of lunch.  All are welcome to come and learn how God invites and empowers us to be builders of God's Reign here on earth.  Please sign-up on the kiosk!

ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DIRECTORY – Next year we will be celebrating our 25 th Anniversary as a parish. Planning has already begun for a number of special projects to commemorate this special occasion.

The first is the preparation of a Church Family Album in which we will include a color photograph of all registered parishioners. The album will be produced by Busson Portrait Directories and will come free to every household.

In the next few weeks we will be announcing more details of the project and be asking you to schedule a time to pose for a picture with your family to be included in the album.

It is fitting that we begin the celebration of our parish life with what is most important to it: the people who make up our church community.

ST. NOEL PICTURE DIRECTORY - You were such a beautiful baby . . . you should have been in pictures. You are still beautiful . . . and you can be in pictures. The St. Noel Picture Directory is coming! Are you interested in helping? Please call the parish office at 440-946-0887.

DO YOU HEAR THE MUSIC CALLING? If you have ever considered joining the St. Noel Music Ministry, now is the time. We are about to begin rehearsal of our Christmas repertoire and would love to have you join us. The choir is open to anyone who likes to sing and can carry a tune. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7-9 and members attend the weekend liturgy of their choice so your schedule remains flexible. We also welcome instrumentalists of all kinds in this group. If you are interested, please call Marc at 440-946-0887 and/or come to a Thursday rehearsal. We will be having our special “season opener” wine and cheese social on Thursday, September 2 nd at 7 p.m. Plan to join us for refreshments and stay to join us in music making. We look forward to having you with us!

GOT VEGETABLES? Does your garden runneth over? Consider donating your overabundance to the St. Augustine Hunger Center. Bring your produce to St. Noel by Friday of each week in August. There is a box on the bench across from the food & clothing drop off for your produce. It will be delivered to the Center by a member of the Social Concerns committee. FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP – Every four years our Bishops issue a document entitles “Faithful Citizenship” which addresses the Catholic perspective on the elections and public policy. Here is this week's quote from that document: “ All believers are called to faithful citizenship to become informed, active and responsible participants in the political process”. A Catholic moral framework does not easily fit the ideologies of “right “ or “left” nor the platforms of any party. We urge fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliations or mere self-interest. We hope that voters will examine the position of candidates on the full range of issues, as well as their personal integrity, philosophy and performance.
