Dear
Parishioner,
As
you know seven of our parishioners went to El Salvador in July for
a nine day immersion experience into the lives and culture of the
El Salvadoran people. We had many experiences there, one of the
richest being with Mujer y Comunidad (Women and Community), the
group of women we've been helping to support through International
Partners in Mission for the past three years, thanks to individual
donations from parishioners as well as the Endowment Fund .
Based
in faith and rooted in their local parish, St. Maria de Pillar,
Mujer y Comunidad engages in a number of activities. (Women need
not be Catholic to be a part of Mujer y Comunidad.) They operate
a small sewing business to help support themselves and their families.
Literacy classes, courses in sewing, workshops on good nutrition
for children, discussions on Human Rights, instruction in El Salvadoran
history, preserving the indigenous dances of El Salvadoran culture,
and praying together are also priorities for the group.
Our
visit included purchasing some of their products, witnessing and
participating in the dances they so beautifully performed, and sharing
a meal of papousas, a dish unique to El Salvador. (Papousas are
made with corn flour and filled with any combination of rice, beans,
cheese, and sometimes onions, garlic or meat. Yum! Yum!) All of
these activities took place in the same, small, humble and very
hot place, yet the women's hospitality, faith and joy were truly
a blessing to us.
In
spite of the dire political and economic situation in El Salvador
we were very encouraged by the fact that this group of approximately
twenty women has taken ownership of their small enterprise and their
outreach to the community through the other activities already mentioned.
They choose their own board of directors and together make decisions
regarding the products to be made, who will cut fabric, who will
assemble garments and who will embroidery what designs.
The
true blessing in this partnership is the trust and mutual respect
that is growing among us and we are very grateful for the economic
support that has facilitated this process. Let us pray that our
relationship continues to give witness to the Gospel!

WHY
DOESN'T THE DIOCESE PROMOTE MORE VOCATIONS? Our
Diocese has one of the best programs in the country for promoting
vocations. The 2005-2006 academic years provided a major boost in
enrollment in our seminaries and one of the largest incoming classes
of any diocese in the United States. We have 22 new seminarians
at Borromeo College Seminary, and 4 new seminarians at St. Mary
Seminary and Graduate School of Theology, bringing our total seminary
enrollment to 68!

we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Come
and experience this healing love of Jesus. After Mass, prayer teams
will be available to pray with you for your special needs. The heavier
the cross the more we need His help up Calvary's Hill.
