Dear Parishioner,

War has become such a common reality in our world that we are all in danger of growing insensitive to its horror. When we hear of devastation and death which results from armed conflicts it can become much too easy just to shake our heads and say “that's the way the world is.” The causes of war are complex and difficult to eliminate. But there will be little hope for peace if we lose the desire for peace.

This July Pope Benedict reaffirmed the evils of war saying, “I feel all the more intensely the impact of the sorrow of the news that comes to me about bloody altercations and episodes of violence that are occurring in so many parts of the world.” Spurred by the Pope's comments the Social Action Office of our Diocese is inviting us to join in “40 days of Prayer, Fasting, and Actions for Peace.” This period will begin on the Feast of St. Louis of France (August 25 th ) and continue until the feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4 th ). The purpose of these 40 days is to build the desire for peace in our world. Those who choose to participate can set aside a period for prayer each day (perhaps 7 minutes). A prayer-reflection booklet for the 40 days is available on the table in the narthex this weekend. Those who choose to fast could certainly fast from food and liquids but might also decide to fast from TV, the computer, a particular sport, or any number of other things. Again, a self-imposed fast in any of these areas is a way to experience our limitations and use that experience to focus on a higher good, in this case the gift of peace.

Here at St. Noel we will mark the beginning of the 40 days with a Service for Peace in our church at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25 th . On Thursday, October 4 th , Bishop Lennon will conclude the 40 days by celebrating a liturgy for peace at noon at the cathedral.

As your pastor – I ask you to consider participating in this spiritual exercise of prayer, fasting and action over 40 days. I believe this effort can be an effective way to counteract complacency towards war and to increase our personal and communal desire to work for a peaceful world.

Fr. George Smiga

COMPUTER RECYCLING – Many people call the furniture bank looking to donate used computers. The best option is to recycle your old units. They are professionally “cleaned” and then refurbished for distribution. Unusable components are recycled. Cuyahoga County is sponsoring Computer Recycling Month in August. For more info, go to: http://www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/comprec.asp . Some communities offer year-round recycling. Check out: http://www.parkworks.org/recycle/recyclespecialcomputers.htm Lake County Residents are not as fortunate. Usually one day in the spring is set aside for computer donations. Go to: http://lake.osu.edu/environmental-education-recycling or contact a county commissioner at: http://www.lakecountyohio.org/commweb to express your views.
