Dear Parishioner,
What do you
believe about Mary? How is being a Catholic different from being
Lutheran, Methodist or Baptist? Why do you dip your hand in that
water and sign yourself as you enter church? Do you have to confess
your sins to a priest; isn't God the one who forgives? What does
the Catholic Church believe about suffering? Will you have to baptize
me again if I want to become Catholic? Do you believe the Bible
is truly the Word of God? Why don't priests marry? How do Catholics
pray?
These
are just a few of the questions that arise when people consider
joining the Catholic Church. As you might guess, some are more easily
answered than others, but all questions are welcome and all questions
are important! Our inquirers bring not only their questions, but
personal stories of their own journeys in faith and often the insights
of the traditions (Christian or otherwise) in which they may have
been raised. In turn, we share with them our stories, the stories
of our community and, most importantly, the BIG stories of our faith
that center especially on Jesus.
If
you are interested in joining us, or would like further information
about this process which is called the Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults (RCIA), please contact Alice Hinkel or Marianne Slattery
at the parish offices. Our next gathering is scheduled for Tuesday
evening, August 10 th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. We generally meet every
other Tuesday from then on through October. Our gathering then for
those who choose to pursue the process, will move to Sunday mornings.
Our
times together are informal and our agenda is based primarily on
the concerns, questions and life and faith experiences of those
who attend. After a time in the beginning phase of the RCIA, these
inquirers may sense, through their prayer and sharing with this
group, that God is truly calling them to become part of the Catholic
family. But it is also possible that an inquirer may discern that
this is not where God is leading him or her and that is OK, too.
In other words, coming to our inquiry sessions does not obligate
one to become Catholic.
Our
life as a faith community is enriched in many important ways, by
our worship, our service, our social events and by those
seeking to understand who we are and ask to become part of the Catholic
family by experiencing the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist. Please keep our parish community and our inquirers
in your prayers that we might always be a community of disciples,
willing to welcome the stranger and to witness the message of Jesus
in word and deed.

JustFaith
- What is the responsibility
of Catholic Christians toward those who are poor? How do we
become people who really care for and act on behalf of those who
are vulnerable? This fall, a new program called JustFaith
will be offered for the first time in our parish. The program
is designed to empower and transform participants so that they can
become voices for the voiceless and agents of God's good news to
those who are oppressed or in need. Be ready for a challenging
but exciting thirty weeks! We will begin with an afternoon
for reflection led by Fr. George on the Social Justice themes of
the Scriptures on Sunday September 12 th . Please note that
EVERYONE, whether you plan on being a part of the JustFaith course
or not, is invited to this event. Then the actual JustFaith
course will begin on Sunday September 26 th and continue through
Sunday, May 15 th . We will gather on these Sunday evenings
from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a fee for materials and
books which is yet to be determined. Please call Alice at
the parish office 440-946-0887 should you have questions.

THE
GOD WHO FREES - Join
us on Wednesday August 11 th at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of information
and reflection featuring the various understandings and theologies
that have arisen out of the experiences of those who struggle to
build the Reign of God in situations of extreme poverty and oppression.
We will examine how these insights invite us into a deeper spirituality
of solidarity with our brothers and sisters, thus leading us to
a richer relationship with God. Our facilitator and guide for the
evening will be Chris Janezic, religion teacher at Villa Angela/St.
Joseph High School and leader of our delegation to El Salvador.
