Dear Parishioner,
For
many years St. Noel has been an active supporter of Project Hope,
an ecumenical faith-based temporary emergency shelter for men, women
and families in Lake County. Beginning originally at the Willoughby
Hills United Methodist Church, Project Hope now has permanent facilities
in Painesville. Their guests who are homeless are able to find shelter
from 7:30 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. the next morning. A hot meal and
showers are
provided.
This is the first year that the shelter has been able to be open
during the summer. Over 65 churches in Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula and
Cuyahoga counties support Project Hope.
Marlene
Cornachio, a parishioner here at St. Noel, has recently joined the
Board of Project Hope and now serves as Development Coordinator.
St. Noel Chamber Singers will perform for the guests in the near
future. How can you help? Through your prayers for the continuing
success of the program. By volunteering
your
time to: provide a meal, launder linens, lead Bible study, worship,
and devotion, perform facility maintenance, prepare mailings, plan
and prepare special events and provide overnight assistance to their
professional staff. And, of course, through your monetary offerings.
It will cost Project Hope $430,000.00 to provide services this year.
You can contact Project Hope at 440-354-6417 or mail your contributions
to:

THE
ROSARY which
is said on the third Tuesday evening of the month at 7:00 p.m. will
be canceled for the months of July and August . Since attendance
is very low during the months that we do say the Rosary, in September
there will be a meeting to see if we should continue meeting on
Tuesday evenings to say the Rosary.
HOSPICE
NEWS - We are
aware that many families in the parish who have dealt with the terminal
illness of a loved one have benefited from the services of Hospice,
an organization dedicated to the respectful and compassionate care
of the dying. Now we have an opportunity to give our input
on the possibility of a hospice facility in our area. The
Catholic Churches of Lake and Geauga Counties are in dialogue with
the Hospice of the Western Reserve regarding such a project.
Want to learn more about what this commitment would require of our
churches and counties? We need everyone's insight, questions
and reflections. There will be a focus meeting here in the
Resurrection Room on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
We hope to see you there.
FOR
LIFE – Copies of this
newsletter from the Diocesan Pro-Life office are available in the
pockets of the Social Concerns Section of the kiosk.

JustFaith
- What is the responsibility
of Catholic Christians toward those who are poor? How do we
become people who really care for and act on behalf of those who
are vulnerable? This fall, a program called JustFaith will
be offered in our parish. The program is designed to empower
and transform participants so that they can become voices for the
voiceless and agents of God's good news to those who are oppressed
or in need. Be ready for a challenging but exciting thirty
weeks!
The
actual JustFaith course will begin on Sunday September 18 th and
continue through Sunday, May 7 th . We will gather on these
Sunday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Please call Alice at the
parish office 440-946-0887 should you have questions. Information
and registration meetings will be held on Saturday, August 27 th
, at 6:15 p.m.; Sunday, August 28 th at 12:15 p.m.; and Thursday,
September 1 st , at 7:30 p.m.
AUGUST
ANNIVERSARY SHOWER
- Next month we will be celebrating 25 years of God's blessings
upon our community and indeed we have been abundantly blessed over
the years. In honor of our
anniversary our Social Concerns Commission is presenting us with
an opportunity to BE a blessing for others. The Diocesan Migration
and Refugee office is in need of a number of items (linens, dishes,
small appliances, etc.) for families who are currently arriving
from Africa, Turkey and other parts of the world and setting up
households. On the weekend of July 30 & 31 you will be
able to pick up a card in the Narthex labeled with a particular
item that you can purchase and then return on August 20 or 21.
Along with the gift card you can also
receive a prayer card for refugees and a flier explaining other
ways to serve those coming to our country. You may
recall our past involvement with the refugee ministry when we actually
sponsored families. While we have not currently been assigned
one particular family to help resettle, this remains an opportunity
to live out the Gospel call to welcome the stranger by assisting
a number of families. We hope you will be able to participate
in this August Anniversary Shower! Questions? Call the
parish office at 440-946-0887.
SOCIAL
JUSTICE GEM
- Marie, her husband Luis, and their three children labor twelve
hours a day on their land in El Salvador to achieve both sustenance
and a small profit. The work is hard but the alternative is
what scares them most. Today, in the reading from the book of Wisdom,
we learn that God cares for all His people and guides the righteous
to act with kindness. In our complex world it is, at times, difficult
to clearly see where kindness lies in economic decisions – and even
more difficult to see how decisions in Washington, D.C. may impact
Maria's family. Bishops of the U.S. and of Central America, “inspired
by the Gospel and the Church's social teaching,” have issued a joint
statement of concern about CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade
Agreement. Put on a fast track for approval by President Bush, and
approved by the Senate two weeks ago, CAFTA will promote trade liberalization
between the U.S. and five Central American countries, including
Maria's El Salvador. For Maria and other's like her in poor farming
communities in Central America, there is fear that subsidized agricultural
products from the U.S. will reach their markets and eliminate the
small profit from their own farm products, much as NAFTA's effect
in Mexico. The bishops are concerned about the ability of CAFTA
to increase opportunities for the poorest and most vulnerable.
Because “the human person must be at the center of all economic
activity,” the bishops ask that the seven governments involved take
the time necessary to provide information and debate on the impact
of this free trade agreement .
