Dear Parishioner,

Charity begins at home. This is a true statement to which most of us would ascribe. With all the needs in our world it only makes sense to address the problems which emerge in our own homes and communities.

Charity begins at home ---- but does not end there. We are all part of one humanity which God has created and for which Jesus has died. The Gospel is not limited by race, language or national boundaries, nor is our call to serve our brothers and sisters who struggle with securing the necessities of life.

It is for this reason that our parish not only supports a variety of efforts for charity and justice in our immediate area but also includes missionary efforts in distant places throughout the world. As you know I will be leaving this week with a delegation of parishioners to visit the group of women we as a parish support in Zaragoza, El Salvador. Our partnership with them in their work to provide a better life for their community testifies to our willingness to reach beyond our borders in the service of Christ.

Another opportunity will be provided next weekend as Fr. Piotr Marek Buchowicz, OFM, will speak at all our liturgies on behalf of the Franciscan Missions. The Franciscans have 5,400 missionaries and 800 missions throughout the world. They serve the poor in every continent following in the steps of St. Francis. They perform a special ministry to people with leprosy, many of whom are children. Fr.Piotr Marek Buchowicz, OFM, will be seeking our monetary support for this work.

You may donate to this missionary appeal three ways: (1) any loose cash in next week's collection (2) ushers will be in the narthex after the liturgies next weekend to accept any offering, or (3) place a donation in next week's collection marked “missionary” (all checks should be made out to St. Noel). Charity does not end at home. The missionary appeal reminds us of our worldwide responsibility. Please be generous next weekend.

Anthony Camino

CLUSTERING NEWS

CAN LAY MINISTERS HELP WITH THE SHORTAGE? Yes, the percentage of parishes with lay ministers is on the rise from 54% in 1990 to 66% in 2005. Most lay ministers work full time, 80% of which are women. Unfortunately, lay ministers do not take the place of priests. Rather, lay ministers are doing the ministries that come from their Baptismal commitment to serve the community of faith.

PARKING LOT SEALING AND STRIPING - Our parking lot will be sealed and striped (weather permitting) on Tuesday, July 18th and Wednesday, July 19th beginning at 12:30 p.m.  During this time, we ask that you please use the Willoughby Hills Community Center driveway (east of St. Noel) and park by the ball fields.  There will be access to walk over to St. Noel.  Thank you for your cooperation.

THE HEALING LITURGY on Wednesday, August 9th will be cancelled and rescheduled for Wednesday, August 16th.  Please change your calendars.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS, LECTORS AND SACRISTANS - The sign-up sheet for the Feast of the Assumption, on Tuesday, August 15 th , is on the bulletin board by the kitchenette. Please add your name if you are available.

AT HOME WITH THE WORD - We will need to place our order for the At Home with the Word books in August.    If we ordered for you last year you are on our list order again.  If you did not order last year and would like a book(s), please call the church office 440-946-0887 by August 10th and we will put your name on the list.  As long as we order in bulk, books are $5.50 a piece.

READY, WILLING & ABLE!   Thanks to twenty-four parishioners the Meal Ministry is ready to go!  Parishioners with a short-term need for assistance with meals on occasions such as illness, death or the birth of a baby should call the parish office to make your need known.  The office will then contact the Meal Ministry coordinator for that month and she or he will in turn call you to arrange for the meal(s).  Should anyone know of a person in need of this ministry you may also call the office to initiate the process. If you would like to be a cook and have not yet signed up please call the parish office at 440-946-0887. Bon Appetitè!

THANK YOU!   The delegation traveling to El Salvador is very grateful for all the generous donations to support the various groups we will be visiting.  Please know the entire parish and the intentions of all our parishioners will be in our prayers!

MINIMUM WAGE INITIATIVE - The first principal of Catholic Social Teaching emphasizes the inherent worth and dignity of the human person.  Just wages are an important reflection of how we as a society live out this value.  With the support of our Diocesan Social Action office and the Ohio Council of Churches, our JustFaith group will be inviting you to sign an initiative petition to place on the Ohio ballot this November, an issue to increase the minimum wage in our state to $6.85 per hour.  The federal minimum wage, which is $5.15 per hour (our Ohio legislature recently raised the state minimum wage from $4.85 per hour to $5.15), has not been increased since 1997.  This means an annual income of $10,712 and would place a family of three, $5400 below the federal poverty level.  Please stop by the table in the Narthex to learn more about this effort and to sign the petition to put this concern before the Ohio voters.  Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this issue of basic justice.
