Dear Parishioner,

Hopefully you've noticed the bright yellow truck parked in the corner of the parking lot by the large hall. The Noel Movers recently purchased a newer truck and have been enjoying the upgrade for the last 2-3 weeks. In addition to being mechanically sound (a major improvement from the previous truck); our new truck also has a working radio and cold air conditioning!

The Noel Movers grew out of our efforts to sponsor refugee families coming to the United States. After seeing how much donated furniture was available and the number of families in need, we decided to continue the ministry and help families throughout Lake and eastern Cuyahoga counties. The Movers started in late 1999 with my Chevy pickup truck. In 2003 I purchased a 1990 Ford box van from the Biagio donut company (it smelled great!), and three years later we have the 2002 yellow GMC truck

To date, over 900 families have donated furniture to the Noel Movers and of those, 200 have donated more than once. Numerous private and county agencies such as Jobs & Family Services, Children Services, Crossroads, Pathways, Neighboring and the St. Vincent de Paul Society refer families to the Noel Movers, and we have delivered furniture, free of charge, to over 600 families in need.

How is all this funded? During the first few years, I simply paid for everything myself. Since then, many generous people have donated to the ministry, and we now have a separate account from which all fuel, maintenance, storage and other costs are drawn. We depleted most of that money to purchase the yellow truck, and are grateful to the endowment fund for helping to cover some of the cost. I felt it was important that the parish own this truck and carry the insurance on it in order to allow us to get the most use out of it. Hopefully, we can form two-person crews to go out and pick up/deliver furniture on their own; this would enable us to more quickly meet the growing demand for our services.

You can help in a variety of ways. First, please call the Noel Movers when you have some furniture to donate. We would be happy to pick it up from your home or arrange a time for you to deliver it to the church. Two hundred twenty-seven registered St. Noel households have already donated to the movers. Second, consider volunteering on the truck either with me or with another person. Perhaps you could serve one Saturday morning a month. Call me at the parish to talk about some possibilities. Finally, on the weekend of August 19/20 the ushers will be in the narthex after all the Masses to accept donations to financially support the Noel Movers and keep the ministry on the road.

An effort is already underway to create a furniture bank in the greater Cleveland area. Hopefully, the Noel Movers can soon be part of a more organized effort to serve those struggling in our midst. Please pray for that effort. At the same time, we must also pray for and work toward an end to the conditions/structures that keep people in poverty. Despite the good work we're doing in the name of Christ, the fact that so many are in need is a reality we cannot tolerate. The Social Justice Ministry continues to do a wonderful job informing us on a variety of issues and calling us to be better disciples. May all of our efforts work together to bring about God's kingdom of justice for all.

CLUSTERING NEWS

WHAT DOES A CLUSTER DO? A cluster engages in the work of pastoral planning for the parishes in the cluster. Parishes will form a ‘Cluster Planning Team' with clergy and lay representatives from each parish. This team will gather relevant information and develop long and short term plans for the next 5-10 years to address priorities discerned from the planning areas listed below. Following consultation and approval, the resulting plans will be implemented by parish leaders in subsequent years, and updated as needed. These plans will also be used by diocesan staff to guide the appointment of priests and other pastoral decisions. Cluster planning areas include:

•  Mass schedules (daily, weekend, holy day).

•  Sacramental ministries and non-Eucharistic worship.

•  Staffing configurations that involve priest, deacons, lay ecclesial ministers, parish-life coordinators, business managers, lay leaders.

•  Sharing parish ministries and administration (faith formation, social justice, and outreach, youth/young adults, seniors, evangelization).

•  Wise use of facilities and buildings.

Sound finances.
