Dear Parishioner,

The preparations for our parish 25th Anniversary are moving forward. Please reserve the date of Sunday, August 21 st in the afternoon and evening. We are planning a relaxing picnic atmosphere with food, games, special gifts, music and prayer. Former staff members of St. Noel will be invited to join us for the event. More details will follow. Parishioners are also working on a history book of our parish which will become available this fall.

Another aspect of our anniversary celebration is available now. The parish picture directories have been completed. All parishioners who participated by having their pictures taken are entitled to a free copy of the directory. These will be available for pick up in the Nativity Room after all the Masses. Each directory will be labeled in alphabetical order. For those who did not have a picture taken a limited supply of extra directories are available for $5.00 each.

Once you pick up the directory, take a few moments to page through it and notice all the new faces which have become a part of our community over the past few years. We should all be thankful for the people both young and old who make St. Noel alive in Christ.

Fr. George Smiga

SOCIAL JUSTICE GEM - In recent weeks there has been much written by the media about the decisions our government leaders made to involve us in the war in Iraq.

Our first reading today shows the concern that a young leader has about the decisions he must make to govern his people. Solomon begs God to give him “an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil” so that he might govern his people wisely. His request pleased God because he had not asked for riches or long life for himself but instead had asked for “understanding to discern what is right.”

Since the time of St. Augustine, the Church has struggled with understanding war in a Christian context. In their pastoral letter on war and peace: The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response, 1983, the U. S. Catholic bishops noted that “peace is both a gift and a human work.” They affirmed two Christian responses the just-war approach and nonviolence.

How these principals apply to concrete situations both politically and personally require discernment that must be guided by the Spirit.

JustFaith - What is the responsibility of Catholic Christians toward those who are poor?  How do we become people who really care for and act on behalf of those who are vulnerable?  This fall, a program called JustFaith will be offered in our parish.  The program is designed to empower and transform participants so that they can become voices for the voiceless and agents of God's good news to those who are oppressed or in need.  Be ready for a challenging but exciting thirty weeks!

The actual JustFaith course will begin on Sunday September 18 th and continue through Sunday, May 7 th .  We will gather on these Sunday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m.  Please call Alice at the parish office 440-946-0887 should you have questions. Information and registration meetings will be held on Saturday, August 27 th , at 6:15 p.m.; Sunday, August 28 th at 12:15 p.m.; and Thursday, September 1 st , at 7:30 p.m.
