Dear Parishioner,

This is a follow-up letter to one which I wrote about five years ago. On December 11, 2004 I shared with you that we were facing a small but troublesome maintenance problem. An unpleasant odor kept manifesting itself in our church. It smelled like rotten eggs. It would come without warning and in no regular pattern.

Since that letter I have continued to work with parishioners and professionals to determine the cause of the odor and how to prevent it. We performed smoke tests. We ran remote cameras through our sewers. We had people crawling through our church heating vents. We dug up and re-directed drains. All to no avail. The smell kept returning.

Last month we tried another approach. We wondered whether the soil fill around the foundation of the church might be of a mixture that contained sulfur. If so, it could, when it became wet, emit a foul odor. We contracted to have soil samples taken from around the foundation to test for this possibility. The samples were normal – no sulfur or other impurities.

However, in digging a trench to take the samples we discovered a pipe. It seems to have been the drain pipe from the old baptismal font which was located on the choir side of the church. The pipe was connected to the sewer. When it was disconnected from the baptismal font, the open end was not capped. In other words, we had an open sewer pipe resting under the floor of our church. Of course, we severed the pipe and sealed the ends.

I am reporting this to you because I am extremely hopeful that we have discovered the cause of the odor and eliminated it. I write with trepidation because I have felt this issue was resolved in the past only to be disappointed. So keep your noses poised and report to me at once any disturbing smells. I hope that a five-year process has now come to an end. If not, we will just start using incense every weekend!

FRESH-PICKED VEGGIES AND FRUIT! COMING SOON!  St. Noel is entering into a relationship with Geauga Family Farms. These ten farmers have formed a CSA – Community Supported Agriculture. Beginning this Spring, fresh, organic produce will be delivered to St. Noel on Saturday afternoons for pick-up. From tender greens to sweet corn, to strawberries, peaches and tomatoes, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will be available to subscribers for 20 weeks.  Scripture and our Catholic tradition remind us of the importance of caring for all of God’s creation. By using our purchasing power in this way we support local farmers, lessen the environmental impact of fossil fuels used in transporting produce and chemical pesticides, and eat foods more healthy for our bodies.  Brochures with further information and instructions for signing up can be found on the table in the narthex.

USED JEWELRY NEED: Do you have costume jewelry that you are tired of and don’t wear any longer? Hunt up your old jewelry to be re-sold before and after the weekend liturgies on April 24th and 25th. Our “jewelry assessors” will price your donations very reasonably and proceeds will benefit our diocesan mission in Chiltuipan, El Salvador. A box to place your used jewelry in can be found in the narthex. Remember, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure!

ITEMS FOR WREN For his Eagle Scout project our parishioner Matt Jarkewicz is collecting shampoo, tooth paste, deodorant and lotion for the Women’s Re-Entry Network during Lent. Something to think about from the St. Noel Endowment Board…. When is the last time you looked at who the beneficiaries are on your life insurance, IRA or other accounts?   It’s time to take a look, update if necessary.  When updating beneficiaries, know that a charity like the St. Noel Endowment fund can be a beneficiary of all or part of one of these assets.
