Dear Parishioner,

I wish to bring two issues to your attention this weekend. The first issue is a reminder that as winter approaches, it is appropriate for us again to consider those in need. Our annual Blanket Sunday will take place on the weekend of October 11th & 12th. When you come to Mass that weekend, we encourage you to bring new or like-new blankets, sheets, pillowcases, towels and washcloths to church with you. This collection will allow the St. Vincent DePaul Society of the Diocese to serve families, children, elderly, homeless and other needy individuals in our metropolitan area. A donation of cash is actually preferable since it allows St. Vincent DePaul to purchase new items in bulk for reduced prices.

On the same weekend, we collect slightly worn men's women's, and children's winter coats, hats, mittens, gloves, boots and scarves in good, clean condition. These items will be distributed to individuals in the area of the St. Augustine Hunger Center.

If you can assist in collecting these items after any of the Masses on October 11th and 12th, please sign up on the volunteer sheet on the kiosk.

The second issue involves our worship. Because of the article in the Plain Dealer last week, we have received several questions regarding possible changes in our liturgy. You will be hearing much more about these changes this fall, but allow me to make two points today.

First, there has been a new "General Instruction on the Roman Missal" which has been issued by the Vatican. This instruction directs certain changes in the way we celebrate the Eucharist which apply to all Catholic Churches throughout the world.

Second, the article in the Plain Dealer was very unclear and perhaps confusing. Certain changes are mandated by the Instruction and others are only suggested. This allows individual parishes such as ours to make adaptations which suit our own community. Our American bishops have given additional directions to guide the implementation of any changes. At present I am working with our staff and our Pastoral Council to determine how the directive of the General Instruction will apply to our Eucharistic celebrations here at St. Noel.

Bishop Pilla has asked that opportunities for education be provided in all parishes before any changes are implemented. We are presently working to make sure that these opportunities will be provided for you through bulletin announcements, parish gatherings and presentations before the liturgies themselves.

So please do not jump to any conclusions from what you hear or read in the media. We have several months to study, shape and implement necessary changes to our worship.

Fr. George Smiga

HEALING MINISTRY - While on earth, Jesus healed all who sought His help. Now from heaven, He continues to send His healing love to help us in our hours of pain, loneliness, sorrow and illness. This Wednesday, during the 6:45 p.m. liturgy, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Come and experience this healing love of Jesus. After Mass, prayer teams will be available to pray with you for your special needs. The heavier the cross, the more we need His help up Calvary's hill.

SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION - The term of service for our current Social Concerns Commission is drawing to a close. We are grateful for their faithful service and the fruits of their labors. Now it is time for us to call forth others to continue this important ministry. There will be a four-week formation and discernment process beginning Wednesday, October 15th for those who would like to explore the possibility of serving our parish and the larger community in this manner. Please prayerfully consider whether or not you might be able to offer your time and talent by being part of the Commission. Also, think about other parishioners you know who have a concern for carrying out the works of charity and justice that you might encourage to consider this invitation. For more information, please call Alice Hinkel at 440-946-0887.
