Dear Parishioner,
As you may recall
from your days in Catholic school or in religious education, one
of the Corporeal Works of Mercy is to visit the imprisoned. Our
Jail Ministry has been doing this on our behalf for several years
now by providing a Communion Service for inmates at the Lake County
Jail one Sunday night a month. Since this ministry is an extension
of our Eucharistic celebration, it is appropriate occasionally to
call the jail ministers forth after Communion at our weekend liturgies
for a blessing and dismissal. This will happen for the first time
at the 11:00 a.m. liturgy on Sunday, September 7th. This action
will remind us that not all people are free or able to participate
in the Mass. Yet they still share a common faith and a common Baptism
with us, and are indeed members of the Body of Christ.
On behalf of
all of you I would like to thank the jail ministers for their faithfulness
to the imprisoned. Let us pray for all who are imprisoned, physically,
emotionally or spiritually that the Spirit of Christ might bring
liberation.

NEWS FROM
ST. NOEL'S JAIL MINISTRY - Today we profile an inmate who recently
attended a Sunday Service at the Lake County Jail. Some are being
housed for assaults and other crimes against people, but a large
percentage of inmates have a drug or alcohol addiction. Their addiction
may have led to their violent behavior, or to other illegal activities.
Mark (not his
real name) was addicted to drugs, has been in and out of the legal
system and came to Lake County Jail after turning himself into police
in Cuyahoga County. There was a warrant for his arrest issued in
Lake County, probably for a parole violation for some previous conviction.
Because of his drug problem, he left his family (more than likely
they had enough and told him to leave). Essentially homeless, and
with only the shabby clothes that he was wearing at the time he
surrendered himself to authorities, he said he reached bottom and
wanted to turn his life around. He knew that drugs were not available
in Lake County Jail so he turned himself in. By the time this appears
in the bulletin, Mark will have served his time and will have been
released from jail. A week before he left, he asked jail volunteers
for a shirt, a pair of pants, a belt and a pair of shoes so that
he could at least make a favorable impression when he applies for
employment and entry into a drug free support group.
Our Sunday evening
service provides a limited amount of support for those in jail.
But often their families are forgotten and face difficult circumstances.
In the Fall the Jail Ministry will begin discussing ways we might
provide some support to families of the incarcerated.
CURIOUS ABOUT
CATHOLICISM? - If so, please join our RCIA (Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults) inquiry group this Thursday evening, August

Catholic. We will spend our time exploring your questions and concerns
about the Catholic faith, as well as addressing one or more of the
basic aspects of our way of life as a faith community. If you have
any questions before Thursday, please call Alice Hinkel at 440-946-0887.
