Dear Parishioner,

We are pleased to announce that our food pantry, which was displaced by the flooding of our basement last fall, will soon be relocated on the upper level in the area that was once the office space for Marianne Slattery and Anthony Camino. (These past months our supplies of food for the pantry have been kept in the homes of several parishioners who manage the food pantry and in a few cupboards that Randy was able to loan us in the hall kitchen).

The work of re-establishing and preparing the space for our new pantry and clothing bins, which will also be relocated, will be undertaken by Kevin Myers who is doing this as his Eagle Scout project. On behalf of Kevin, whose goal it is to fill those shelves, and the 20-25 families who receive food from us each month, we are asking for your help! While we welcome your contributions at any time, we are having a major food drive on the weekend of August 23 & 24 to get our new food pantry up and running. We are happy to accept whatever you can bring. However, in an effort to assure a more equal distribution of items, we are suggesting that you provide the items in the following list which correspond to the first letter of your last name:

A-B TOILET PAPER, PAPER TOWELS, KLEENEX
C-D LAUNDRY DETERGENT, DISH WASHING SOAP, HAND SOAP, TOOTHPASTE
E-G PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY
H-K PASTA, PASTA SAUCE, RICE, TUNA OR HAMBURGER HELPER, NOODLES
L-M CANNED MEATS, TUNA, BEEF STEW, CHILI, PORK & BEANS
N-R CEREAL, PANCAKE MIX, SYRUP
S-Z CANNED VEGETABLES, CANNED FRUITS, TEA OR COFFEE

We are eager to have our new pantry in working order and we appreciate anything you can do to help us keep it well supplied so that we can assist those we are called to serve. Once again we thank you for your generosity and want to assure you of the gratitude of those we are able to assist. May God continue to guide us in all of our efforts to live out the Christian call to be people of peace and justice.

Alice Hinkel

Here are six suggestions, which have been endorsed by the Catholic Commission of our diocese, that Call to Renewal makes to help overcome poverty:

1) Give priority to those who are poor - both in our personal, family and work lives and in our congregational and organizational practices - through prayer and dedication of our time and resources.
2) Decide our financial choices in ways that promote economic opportunity and justice for those in poverty.
3) Evaluate public policies and political candidates by how they impact people who are poor.
4) Challenge racism, dismantle the structures of racial injustice and white privilege still present, and seek reconciliation among all groups in our society.
5) Nurture the bonds of family and community and protect the dignity of each person.
6) Organize across barriers of race, denomination, and social boundaries in common commitment and action to overcome poverty in our own communities, our nation, and our world.
