Dear Parishioner,

As the term of service for our present Social Concerns Commission is drawing to a close, we would like to review some present activities the Commission has initiated and some goals to be addressed in the next few months.

The Health Care Task Force is pleased that our congressional representative, Steve LaTourette, has introduced legislation which will hopefully begin a much needed dialogue about health care needs in our country. Members of the task force have met several times with Mr. LaTourette to encourage such a dialogue. The task force also wants to thank all those in our parish and beyond who supported Health Care Access Resolution 99. More details about the proposed legislation and other health care news will be forthcoming in a future bulletin.

Aware that peace is an ongoing goal in our personal lives and in our world, our peace prayer and reflection group, "Let There Be Peace", continues to meet every Sunday from 12:15 to 1:00 PM. Members of the group share the responsibility of preparing our gatherings but our time together always begins and ends with prayer and generally allows for some time for reflection or discussion. We would also like to remind you of the listing of people in the armed services located on the kiosk. These people are included in our prayers and we would invite you to add at any time the names of others serving in the military.

Since its inception several years ago, the jail ministry, which initially began by providing a Communion Service once a month at the Lake County jail, has expanded to now include a women's Bible study which gathers on Thursday mornings. St. Anthony Parish in Fairport Harbor provides a weekly Bible study for men. In September, our jail ministers and those from St. Mary parish in Painesville and St. Anthony parish in Fairport Harbor will be meeting with Sr. Rita Mary Harwood, director of the Diocesan Parish Life Office. The purpose of this gathering will be to explore the possibility of beginning a support group for families of the incarcerated.

Presently, we are also in dialogue with our partner parish, St. Augustine, about the possibility of occasionally having one of our weekend liturgies signed to enhance the worship experience for our own deaf and hearing impaired parishioners. As you may know, St. Augustine has been the site for the diocesan apostolate to the deaf for many years, so their support and guidance in this ministry will be of great assistance.

Lastly, let me briefly mention that beginning Wednesday, October 15, 2003, we will begin a four-week formation and discernment process for our next Social Concerns Commission. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to October. In the meantime, perhaps you might like to pray about this invitation which is extended to all parishioners to be a part of the Commission. The call to serve those in need is an integral part of our Catholic faith and your gifts may just be the ones needed by the Commission as we work to respond to Christ's call to help create a more peaceful, just and loving world.
