Dear Parishioner,
During the week
of July 6-12, 14 of our teens will be participating in Young Neighbors
in Action in Buffalo, NY. In previous years, Young Neighbors have
taken our teens to Chicago, Washington, DC and San Francisco. Each
day, work teams head out to their sites and serve for 6 hours. In
the evenings, the Young Neighbors staff facilitates discussions
and experiences that connect our beliefs with our actions.
This year, our
group will serve at L'Arche community called Providence House; a
second group will serve at Computers for Children; and a third group
will serve at a soup kitchen, Loaves and Fishes. Work will include:
cooking and serving meals, doing outdoor work, interacting with
residents, general cleaning and much more. By the end of the day,
these kids are tired!
The experience
of serving the poor in a strange location has many benefits. The
Christian call to serve must extend beyond our familiar boundaries
and comfortable relationships. Young Neighbors pushes the kids to
broaden their horizons and expand their understanding of Church.
After a week of service to complete strangers, these teens can answer
the questions, "Who is my neighbor?" in a new and much
more profound way.
The week energizes
the teens to continue serving upon our return. Young Neighbor veterans
regularly make themselves available with the parish and community.
The confidence they gain and the skills they develop are invaluable
back at home.
Finally, teens
from across the country participate in the program. Friendships
develop and have lasted throughout high school and beyond. I find
this social dimension to be a major factor in St. Noel continuing
with the program.
Thanks to all
who supported this trip through our pancake breakfasts, ham sales,
clambake and stock sales. We do have a generous community! Any additional
help would be greatly appreciated. The kids have worked hard and
are looking forward to the week. Please remember our team: Katie
Troha, Katie DeFrank, Casey Reed, Brian Myers, Kevin Myers, Jason
Schaner, Justin Ekin, Chris Miller, Matt Bartolotta, Amanda Duca,
Audra Duca, Meghan Hope, Megan Slattery, and Nick Daly.

message does make a difference.
