Dear Parishioner,
Today I would
like to make two announcements both of which relate to food: the
food in our food pantry and the meal of the Eucharist.
Each
month our food pantry at St. Noel provides 25-30 families in our
area with enough food for three days.
We
are very pleased to announce that because our building project has
improved the size and security of the food pantry, it has now been
inspected and approved to handle government foods. This will allow
us to receive some free foods and to purchase others at a much reduced
cost, especially frozen meats. While we have always offered a nice
selection of items to our clients, we were not always able to offer
much variety with regard to protein—primarily only tuna, peanut
butter and occasionally some canned stew. When we opened the new
pantry the Daiber family of our parish donated a freezer to allow
for storage of frozen products.
Our
service area will include Willoughby Hills, Kirtland, Kirtland Hills,
Waite Hill and Willoughby south of route 2. All clients will be
interviewed for proof of residence and eligibility. Of course, we
will always be able to serve parishioners in need regardless of
where they may live.
Despite
these improvements we still need your help. We will be using our
Social Concerns Fund to purchase government items. However, we will
especially need your donations of soaps, toothpaste and paper products,
none of which can be purchased with food stamps. Also, the variety
of foods available from the government varies from month to month.
I
would like to thank all of you for your ongoing support of this
ministry and to thank especially Bob Wollen, Ray & Mary Ellen
Buzanski, and Karen Myers who have taken on the primary responsibility
of the day-to-day operations of the pantry. God has richly blessed
us and as always calls us to share those blessings with those in
need.
The
second announcement regards the food of the Eucharist. In the ongoing
implementation of the New General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(GIRM) there will be one small change in our posture at Mass. After
the priest prepares the gifts of Bread and Wine at the Altar he
says, “Pray my brothers and sisters that this our sacrifice might
be acceptable . . .” and the assembly responds, “May the Lord accept
the sacrifice at your hands …” In the past the assembly remained
seated during this prayer and stood when it was finished. Now according
to the norms of the GIRM we are asked to stand before we pray this
prayer. This is a small change but it brings consistency to our
liturgy. Standing is the usual position for prayer. It is a position
of respect and honor. It is a sign of resurrection, and it is through
Christ's resurrection that we are able to pray to our God as daughters
and sons. We stand during the opening and closing prayer. We stand
during the Eucharistic Prayer. We stand during the Lord's Prayer.
Beginning this weekend we will also stand during the prayer after
the preparation of the gifts. The presider will invite you to stand
before the prayer begins.
Another
handout has been prepared by Fr. J. Glen Murray of our diocese to
explain this change. Copies will be on ivory paper in the kiosk.
Fr. Murray also explains the option of using the Apostles' Creed
in place of the Nicene Creed at Mass. We have been using this option
for some time here at St. Noel. We will be following the diocesan
recommendation and using the Apostles' Creed during Lent and Easter.
As
we continue to implement these refinements to our liturgy in conformity
with the GIRM; I thank you for your openness and cooperation. Together
we will strive to make our liturgies ever new and truly life giving.
Fr.
George Smiga
PICK
UP AND DROP OFF BOXES -There
are times (especially on Saturdays and Sundays and sometimes during
the week) when no one is in the church office. During these times,
in order to make it easier for you to drop off items for a particular
staff person, or to pick up items that have been specifically left
for you, we will be putting two file boxes on the bench next to
the double doors leading into the new wing. One box will be marked
“PICK UP” and the other “DROP OFF”. Please
when you leave any items; make sure the name of the person you are
leaving them for is on the item.

social doctrine is an integral part of our faith; we need to pass

Bishops, Communities of Salt and Light).
