Dear Parishioner,
I received
an e-mail on our parish website this week suggesting that it would
be an improvement to our liturgies if we began them on time. The
person providing this suggestion commented that our liturgies usually
begin from 5-10 minutes late. This comment surprised me since I
was always under the impression that our Masses began rather punctually.
Of course, there are some times where unusual circumstances delay
the liturgy, but I frequently check my watch as we begin, and it
is routinely within a minute of the scheduled Mass time. Yet, I
also know I could be misreading something so I checked my recollections
out with other people who affirmed the fact that they also thought
we were beginning on time.
This
left me with the question of how could perception on this matter
be so divergent. Then it struck me that we had differing understandings
of what was the beginning of the Mass. It is likely that the person
who sent the e-mail marks the beginning of the Mass when we begin
the opening song. I have a different understanding. For me, the
Mass begins when the announcements are made. Our liturgies are the
primary place that our community comes together. There is a real
need on a regular basis to announce upcoming events or projects,
learn music, to dismiss children for Children's Liturgy of the Word
and to call the attention of the assembly to issues which pertain
to our shared life. We try to keep these announcements to a minimum,
but that does not mean they are unimportant. They remind us that
a parish does more than just worship together. There are opportunities
for education, spiritual growth, service, and political awareness
which supports our faith. This period beginning the Mass is perhaps
the only time we have to bring them to your attention. This is why
it is my belief that the announcements should be included within
the scheduled time we share together each weekend.
Now
of course, both perceptions of this matter have validity; but I
wanted to take this opportunity to explain my understanding. Now,
none of us want to sit through unnecessary announcements; so I promise
that we will do our best to keep them short and whenever possible
direct those seeking further information to our parish bulletin.
I also promise to strive to begin those announcements promptly at
5:00 p.m. on Saturday and at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday
mornings.

George Smiga

YOU HEINEN'S! – Several
of our ministries here at St. Noel benefit from generous contributions
from Heinen's store at Pineridge Plaza. The last Sunday of every

at the St. Augustine Hunger Center. Recently they also gave us a
large supply of both paper and plastic bags for use in our food
pantry. We are very appreciative and especially want to thank the
manager, Jim O'Toole. This would also be a good time to remind you
that Heinen's sells Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee and tea. For
about a year now we have been serving Equal Exchange Coffee on Sundays
in an effort to ensure coffee farmers with a just price for the
coffee they grow. If you would like more information about fair
trade prices please check the Social Concerns section of the kiosk.
