Dear Parishioner,

This year, as many of you are aware, we continue the full implementation of the re-ordering of the Sacraments of Initiation.

All those who are preparing for confirmation and communion have been participating in actions of love and service within our parish and throughout our neighborhood and community. At all liturgies next weekend, those in second grade and some of their older brothers and sisters will come forward to receive the support and blessing of the community. We will pray that God directs them as they prepare for full initiation into our Catholic faith.

Before or after the liturgy if you see any of these young people, we encourage you to talk to them about what they have learned in their preparation and how they have shared in the works of our Christian community. The Sacraments of Initiation as all the sacraments, are the action of the entire community. Your interest in the young people of our parish and your support as they prepare for the sacraments is essential to the full celebration of God's love in their lives. Please reflect God's presence to them by your words, your actions and your prayers.

Fr. George Smiga

HEALING MINISTRY - While on earth, Jesus healed all who sought His help. Now from heaven, He continues to help us in our hours of pain, loneliness, sorrow and illness. This Wednesday during the 6:45 p.m. liturgy, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Come and experience this healing love of Jesus. After Mass, prayer teams will be available to pray with you for your special needs. The heavier the cross the more we need His help up Calvary's hill.

SEEDS OF LITERACY PROJECT - We have been very pleased with the response to our call to tutor children and adults at St. Augustine Parish Learning Center. So far thirteen parishioners have committed themselves to participate on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. There is now a need for help during the morning hours from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Resource material is available to help an adult successfully complete the GED course and move on to a better life. Children are in need of math and reading help. This project is part of the St. Noel/St. Augustine Partnership. Your help in this important ministry could really make a difference in the life of another person. Ride sharing is available if wanted. To sign up as a tutor or to receive more information, please call our parish office (440-946-0887). Brochures are available in the kiosk in the narthex.

"LET THERE BE PEACE" - Our prayer and reflection group on peace, sponsored by our Social Concerns Commission, will resume its gatherings on a weekly basis beginning today (Sunday), January 5, 2003 at 1:15 p.m. in the nursery, concluding by 2:00 p.m. Our first gathering on December 15th drew seventeen concerned people! While the main focus of our time together is prayer and reflection, we will make available some educational materials that offer guidance from our bishops concerning those things that enhance or threaten peace. In the meantime, those who gathered on the 15th have agreed to pause for a moment everyday at Noon to say a brief prayer for peace. We invite anyone so inclined to join us in prayer at that time each day and we hope to see you this Sunday afternoon at 1:15 p.m.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE - While you are enjoying a "just" cup of coffee after Mass today, pick up a brochure from the table which explains how fair trade coffee benefits small coffee farmers in developing countries. You can purchase fair trade coffee at Heinens or Starbucks or ask your favorite grocery store to begin stocking it.
